Barnsley Music Service provides specialist instrumental and vocal music tuition in schools throughout the borough and at the Music Centre in Grove Street.  The service also offers a range of ensemble opportunities that operate in association with the music service.

Read about 'a day in the life of a music teacher' in the council's Open Door magazine.

Through whole class teaching, children in Key Stage 2 are given an opportunity to learn a musical instrument or receive specialist vocal tuition free of charge for one year.  This tuition is given to full classes of pupils using materials and schemes of work devised by music service teachers.  Projects available to schools are: African drums, samba, string orchestra, violin, brass band, cornet, tenor horn, alto trombone, clarinet, flute, recorder, African choir, traditional singing, keyboard, guitar and ukulele.

Individual and small group tuition is given to pupils with charges based on £34.00 per hour and pupils can hire an instrument (if available) for £13 per term.  Pupils who receive free school meals are entitled to free tuition and instrument hire.  Many pupils opt to take practical examinations operated by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM), Trinity/Guildhall and Rock School and currently the pass rate is 99.5%.  Pupils passing at grade 6 level and above also earn UCAS points to assist them with university applications.  Instrumental tuition is offered for:

  • violin, viola, cello and bass
  • guitar (acoustic, electric and bass)
  • flute, clarinet, oboe, saxophone, bassoon, recorder
  • cornet, trumpet, flugel horn, tenor horn, french horn, baritone, euphonium, trombone and tuba
