Article: Scrutiny focuses on domestic violence
Article Body
At its meeting at the Central Library (lecture theatre) at 2pm on Thursday (9 February), Barnsley Councils Personal and Family Wellbeing scrutiny commission will be looking into the issue of domestic violence and its impact on the health and wellbeing of children and young people in Barnsley, as part of its investigation into safeguarding children.
The commission has decided to look at this issue because it is concerned that the reductions in funding for public services, the challenging economic situation and a range of policy changes could aggravate the problem of domestic violence in the borough.
It is estimated that welfare benefit reforms could mean as much as £33.2 million could be taken out of Barnsleys economy. This may put vulnerable families under increased pressure as they find it increasingly difficult to manage their own budgets.
The chair of the Personal and Family Wellbeing Scrutiny Commission, Cllr Jennifer Worton, said: We are very concerned that domestic violence may increase in Barnsley as families find themselves under increased financial pressure.
Bills and living costs are increasing at a time when income and benefits are being reduced. This could leave some families unable to cope and they may resort to violence. It is essential that families are supported to minimise the risk of family breakdown.
We already know that witnessing domestic violence can cause children significant harm and can affect their behaviour and wellbeing. The problem is that sometimes domestic violence can be difficult to identify as it happens in the home. There is also a stigma attached to it, and some people may find it difficult to seek help.
We need to find out whether multi-agency services working together understand the extent of the problem, and whether sufficient support is available to help people who find themselves in this situation. That is why the commission is looking at this issue - to make sure that help and support is in place and is working.
The commission also wants to hear what Barnsley people think.
