Article: The old way to Everest
Article Body
The book launch of Everest The Old Way will be hosted at Barnsley Central Library, Shambles Street on Saturday, 18 February at 10.30am.
The book tells the fascinating story of a group of friends and their expedition to Everest, not once but twice.
In 1967 on their first trip, the friends left their base in Barnsley and took the overland trail through Europe, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, India and Nepal, with Everest as their goal. They then trekked from Kathmandu to Kala Pattar, at an altitude of 18,200 feet.
They then returned in 2010, in their sixties, to discover a changed world. This inspired them to write their book. Based on their original diaries and photographs, it describes the challenges and rewards of a journey that can never be repeated, and is contrasted with the trip many people take today.
Two of the books authors, David Peckett and John Driskell, will be at the launch to speak about their book and show photographs from their expedition. Copies of the book will be available to buy and have signed.
Councillor Jenny Platts, Cabinet spokesperson for Adults and Communities said; This event will be both interesting and enjoyable. Barnsley Libraries are pleased to be hosting this book launch and I hope that local people will take the opportunity to come along.
To book a place for the book launch the event is free but places are limited please contact Jill Craven, Reader and Audience Development Officer, on 01226 773921 or email JillCraven@barnsley.gov.uk.
