Article: Barnsleys lowest carbon footprint
Article Body
Barnsley Council has, for the second time, been awarded the Carbon Trust Standard certificate in recognition of its continuous efforts to reduce the carbon emissions of its buildings over the last two years.
The council has reduced its carbon emissions by eight percent year-on-year since March 2009, the equivalent of almost 6,000 tonnes of CO2e, across all of its commercial buildings.
To achieve this, the council has introduced a number of energy saving initiatives. Examples include installing voltage optimisation at buildings such as the Metrodome Leisure complex. The device controls the amount of electricity coming into the building, saving over 700 tonnes of CO2 a year.
Mike Rawlins, Partnership and Shared Services Manager said: This is a welcome recognition of the councils continuous efforts to reduce its CO2 emissions. By reducing the amount of emissions we release into the atmosphere we can help to significantly improve the air quality within Barnsley, as well as contribute towards global efforts around climate change.
It has also saved the council money, reducing our energy bill and the amount of energy level tax we will have to pay under the Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme (2012).
