Town heroes acknowledged

Spirit of Barnsley winners 2009Fashion guru Rita Britton, owner of trend-setting store Pollyanna, handed out the prizes at the sixth annual Spirit of Barnsley Awards on Wednesday night (June 24).

The awards, sponsored by the local strategic partnership One Barnsley and the Barnsley Chronicle, were held at Barnsley Town Hall. They recognise people who go that extra mile to make a difference in the borough.

Winners on the night were:
Claire Dawson – for overcoming her own substance misuse and going on to help others by setting up the charity group Aiding Barnsley’s Recovery.
Peter Shields - for his work in securing grants to mark the graves of stillborn babies and for creating the Dearne Memorial Group.
Terry Sykes – for his Rotarian work, his leadership of the Friends of Cannon Hall and his efforts to turn part of the town hall into a museum.
Janet Tighe – for her voluntary community engagement work in the church field of the Blessed Sacrament church.

Younger people:
Hayley Hewitt– for her work on the Youth Opportunities Fund section panel and the youth council.
Alex Donald – for his work with the youth service and for representing Barnsley as part of the UK Youth Parliament.

Congratulations and our thanks to all of them for the contribution they make to the borough.
