Licences are required to drive Hackney Carriages. All licences expire on the 30th June every year, irrespective of when they are issued.

Licences may be granted by the Council who are required to be satisfied that applicants are fit and proper persons to hold such licences.

Application forms are available from our offices at the Civic Hall, Eldon Street. Our office at the Civic Hall is open from 9.00am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday. Bus & Train - The Civic Hall, Eldon Street is within easy walking distance of Barnsley Transport Interchange.

Response Times/Next Steps

Upon receipt of an application, CRB enhanced disclosure check is carried out, arrangements are made for a driving test and written test (local knowledge, highway code, licence conditions and customer care).
The Council aim to issue licences within 14 days.
