Summary

Licences are required to drive private hire vehicles. All licences expire on the 30th June every year, irrespective of when they are issued.

Eligibility

Licences may be granted by the Council who are required to be satisfied that applicants are fit and proper persons to hold such licences.

Distribution Points and Opening Times/Locations

Leaflets are available from our offices at the Civic Hall, Eldon Street. Our office at the Civic Hall is open from 9.00am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday. Bus & Train - The Civic Hall, Eldon Street is within easy walking distance of Barnsley Transport Interchange.

Response Times/Next Steps

Upon receipt of an application, a CRB Enchanced disclosure check is carried out, arrangements are made for a driving test and written test (local knowledge, highway code, licence conditions and customer care).
The Council try to issue licences within 14 days.

Additional Notes

Applicants may be required to appear before the Council's Licencing Regulatory Board, where there is some doubt as to his/her fitness to hold a licence i.e. criminal convictions.

A 19 years old (subject to production of evidence of insurance).

Q Does the licence allow me to drive minibuses having over 8 seats?

A No, a PSV licence is required for that type of vehicle. The Council licence vehicles for private hire purposes up to 8 passenger seats.
