A licence is required to make collections of money or articles from houses / premises for charitable purposes.

Licences may be granted by the Council who are required to be satisfied that applicants are fit and proper persons to make such collections.

Leaflets are available from our offices at the Civic Hall, Eldon Street. Our office at the Civic Hall is open from 9.00am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday. Bus & Train - The Civic Hall, Eldon Street is within easy walking distance of Barnsley Transport Interchange.

Response Times/Next Steps
Upon receipt of an application, consultation takes place with the police and in certain cases the charity commissioners. The Council try to process applications within 14 days.

No out of hours procedure for this service.
Additional Notes
Licences are not required where a Home Office exemption certificate is in force (usually issued to large charitable organisations). The Council are still required to be notified of these.

Q Do I need a licence for collecting from public houses?
A Yes in cases where money is taken at the time from each public house. If however receptacles are left at a number of public houses and collected at a later date, no licence is needed.
