General Health & Safety Awareness for Managers, Supervisors and Employees

Risk Assessment - 'Risk Assessment' is a process of identifying hazards and determining the risk of harm occurring from them. The process is a necessary part of good health and safety management in the workplace, and all employers are required under health and safety law to carry out suitable risk assessments. When conducted properly, risk assessment is a way of identifying risks to the health and safety of people in the workplace and is a vital step in reducing the incidence of occupational ill-health and injury.
If the thought of conducting a risk assessment in the workplace leaves you feeling baffled, you are unsure about your obligations under health and safety law or you just don't know where to begin, don't worry, help is at hand! The Council is now offering a training course designed to assist employers in successfully carrying out risk assessments in the workplace. The course lasts half a day, is aimed at small-to-medium-sized employers and is entirely free of charge. It provides practical advice and guidance on how to carry out risk assessments that comply with health and safety laws. There is also the opportunity to seek specialist advice from Health and Safety Inspectors.

Manual Handling,

Hazardous Substances (COSHH)

Noise at Work

Accidents and Accident Investigation and

Fire Safety Awareness.

The Council offers also a Foundation Certificate in Health & Safety in the Workplace. The six-hour course has been designed to give workers an appreciation of the fundamentals of good health and safety practice, and concludes with an examination to achieve a nationally recognised Certificate in Health and Safety, backed by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health.

Course bookings should be made on the relevant course application form. Copies of the form can be obtained by calling Regulatory Services, downloading from this site or completing on line. If your company or organisation would prefer an in-house course run on your own premises, it can be arranged subject to having a minimum of 12 participants. How the customer can help

Employers and the self employed should consider their own capabilities and those of their employees in relation to health and safety. All people working in any undertaking with duties relating to health and safety have a part to play in ensuring the requirements of the law are complied with.

To enable employees to contribute effectively in assisting their employers to comply with these requirements they must have a suitable understanding of these duties and how they relate to them and their employers. To enable them to understand they should be trained to a level appropriate to their duties e.g. management and supervisory staff require a more in depth level of knowledge than "shop floor staff".

In line with the requirements of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 all organisations should appoint an appropriate number of suitably trained people to assist them in complying with their statutory duties. These people may need formal qualifications in health and safety. Information on these can be obtained from such organisations as the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) or the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) (see related links)

If you are unsure as to the level of training required you should contact us for advice on the training

To help us meet the spirit of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995; we are keen to know about any special requirements you may need to ensure you have full access and participation in our courses. Large print and Braille versions of documents are available, as is an induction loop.
