Any one wishing to trade as a hairdresser or barber (including mobile hairdresser or barber) in the Borough is required to register with Regulatory Services, Barnsley MBC.

An application should be made to Regulatory Services.
Application forms can be obtained by calling personally, request by post or telephone or by downloading directly from Regulatory Services web site.
The application should be returned either personally, by post, fax or electronically from the web site using e-mail. The application will be processed and the registration certificate and a copy of the byelaws will be sent to the applicant. These must be displayed either in the salon or, in the case of mobile hairdressers, carried with them.
Officers from Regulatory Services, Health and Safety Enforcement team will normally arrange to visit and inspect the premises.

General
All hairdressers and barbers (including mobile hairdressers) are required to be registered with the Local Authority and must comply with the Borough Council Bylaws relating to hairdressers and barbers.
All premises must be kept in a clean condition. Floors must be regularly swept and hair clipping and other waste placed in an appropriate storage container awaiting disposal in accordance with local authority requirements
All fixtures and fittings should be of such material as to be easily cleaned; e.g. fabric-covered chairs are not suitable. All surfaces should be wiped with a disinfectant regularly throughout the day.
All equipment must be kept in a clean condition and maintained as necessary. Appropriate means of cleaning or sterilising must be provided
All towels and other items which come into contact with customers must be clean and used only once before being washed at a high temperature.
All gowns should be washed regularly and should any contamination or soiling with blood etc., occur that gown should not be re-used until it has been washed at a high temperature.
Solid soap, powder puffs, alum blocks or sponges should not be used.
A shaving brush must only be used for the first lather, once shaving has commenced the brush cannot be used.
Styptics should only be applied using disposable pads, e.g. cotton wool or swabs.
Powder should be applied using a spray.
