Anyone wishing to trade as a Tattooist, Ear Piercer or Electrolysist (including mobile practitioner) is required to register with Barnsley MBC - Regulatory Services.

An application should be made to Regulatory Services Application form (SP1) can be obtained by calling personally, request by post or telephone or by downloading directly from Regulatory Services web site or completing on-line (see Associated Links).
The application should be returned either personally, by post, fax or electronically from the web site using e-mail.The application will be processed and the registration certificate and a copy of the byelaws sent to the applicant. These must be displayed either in the salon or, in the case of mobile practitioners, carried with them.
Officers from Regulatory Services, Health and Safety Enforcement team will normally arrange to visit and inspect the premises.

All tattooist, ear piercing or electrolysis (including mobile practitioners) are required to be registered with the Local Authority and must comply with the Borough Council Byelaws relating to tattooist, ear piercing or electrolysis.
All premises must be kept in a clean condition.
All fixtures and fittings should be of such material as to be easily cleaned, e.g. fabric covered chairs are not suitable. All surfaces should be wiped with a disinfectant after each customer
All equipment, gowns, towels and other items which come into contact with customers must be clean and used only once before being sterilised using appropriate means e.g. at high temperature by use of autoclave.
All gowns should be washed regularly and should any contamination or soiling with blood etc., occur that gown should not be re-used until it has been washed at a high temperature.
All sharps - needles etc - must be stored in a safe manner e.g. a yellow and red sharps box, and disposed of in line with local authority guidelinesDocumentation relating to the disposal of all classified waste should be kept

No person under the age of 18 should be tattooedPractitioners must make every effort to establish the age of the customer by some verifiable means e.g. driving licence
ALL STAFF MUST BE FULLY TRAINED IN THE PRACTICES OUTLINED IN THIS DOCUMENT.
