A permit is required to allow money to be collected or articles to be sold in streets or public places for charitable purposes.
Permits may be issued by the Council who are required to be satisfied that applicants are fit and proper persons to hold such licences.

Provide proof of identification together with any authorisation from the charity who is to benefit. Provide a few alternative dates for the proposed collection.

Once an application is received, the police are consulted and in certain cases, the charity commissioners. The Council try to process applications within 14 days.

A No, money may only be collected for charitable purposes.
Q My local supermarket has said I can collect for charities inside the premises. Do I need a permit to collect?
A No, the premises are private and not a public place.
Q Are there restrictions on the number of permits which are issued?
A Yes, only one permit can be in force in an area on a particular day.
