In 2003, six of the municipal parks benefited from sharing a £677k 'Transforming Your Space' grant, awarded to the authority by the New Opportunities Fund. The money is to be put towards various improvement schemes which include the provision of a Multi-Use Games Area, drainage of playing fields, new footpaths and tree and shrub plantations.
In addition to this award a further £120K was obtained under the 'Playing Field and Community Green Spaces' initiative, which has seen the re-instatement of the Mapplewell Park playing field and the drainage of both Barugh Green and Birdwell Recreation Grounds.
Royston Park has also benefited from a £270k grant from the Football Foundation towards the provision of a new changing pavilion and the drainage of the playing field.
Plans for a lottery-funded restoration scheme for Locke Park has also been boosted by news of its inclusion in a national register of parks and gardens of special interest. It has been given grade 2 status as a good example of a 19th Century public park.
The authority are always looking at ways to improve the sites and the introduction, during the course of the year of on site maintenance staff at Elsecar and Cudworth is another step forward to providing well maintained and appealing facilities.
