Barnsley's Periodic Electoral Review took place during 2002 and 2003 and formed part of a national programme to ensure greater equality in the size of electoral wards within individual local authorities and to guarantee that their councillors represent roughly the same number of people.
Following this review the Electoral Commission (the body set up by Parliament to carry out these reviews) decided that all of the Borough's wards should be altered - although some would change more than others.
Instead of 22 wards there are now 21. Some of these still use their old names - for instance, Royston - but others have completely new names, such as St Helens and Stairfoot.
The new wards came into effect at the time of the Local Government Elections on 10th June, 2004. At these elections all 63 places on the Council - 3 for each of the 21 wards - were contested (normally, only one Council place per ward is contested).
The new maps show Barnsley's revised wards and how they compare to the old ones. (Please be aware that the high-resolution maps may take longer to download as they are substantially large PDF files. The low-resolution maps are high quality JPG files that have a smaller file size)
Copies of these maps are available in the Central Library (Archive and Local Studies). You can also find out more by looking on the Electoral Commission Website.
