The robes are rich scarlet, trimmed with sable, and the hat, which is worn with the robes on outdoor occasions, is known as a cocked hat. They were presented to the town in March 1873, and cost approximately £50, the money being subscribed by members of the Council and other residents. They were first worn by Alderman Charles Newman at the Lord Mayor of London's banquet on 26th March, 1873. Robes are still worn by successive Mayors at all Civic ceremonial occasions.
Mayoral Chains
The Mayor's Chain of Office was presented to Barnsley when it was a Municipal Borough, by Members of the Council and other residents of the town and district in November, 1871. It was designed and supplied by messrs. Garrad & Co., court jewellers of Haymarket, London, at a cost of just over £200. The chain and badge are made of gold and the badge bears the armorial bearings of the former County Borough of Barnsley. On the reverse are the names of Barnsley's first two Mayors, Alderman Henry Richardson (1869-70) and Alderman John Tyas (1870-72). The names of succeeding Mayors are engraved on the links forming the chain.
The Chain of the Mayoress is a particularly beautiful chain and was presented by Dr. and Mrs. M. Carrington Sykes in recognition of the Coronation year of King Edward VII, 1901. It was supplied by Mr. R. F. Mason, (J. Mason, Silversmiths of Queen Street, Barnsley and Rotherham).
Mace
The mace is a heavy staff usually with a richly ornamented head and is carried traditionally as a sign of office.
It was made by the firm J. Mason, Silversmith of Barnsley and Rotherham to commemorate the coronation of King Edward VII. It cost about £125 and it was presented to the former Barnsley Town Council on 6th May, 1902. Today, it is still carried before the Mayor of Barnsley by his official bearer on all civic ceremonial occasions.
Barnsley's mace is a beautiful object and is engraved and enamelled with the various symbols and Coats of Arms which represent the town's industries and historic connections
Barnsley Silver
Barnsley has its own collection of silverware housed in special display cabinets in the Town Hall in the main reception area and on the first floor landing.
This collection was started by Councillor Harry Dancer, a former Alderman of Barnsley during his year of office as Mayor 1962 to 1963. The collection contains many beautiful pieces kindly donated by the various organisations associated with the town. There are also other gifts from as far afield as Germany, China and the Ukraine.
