We established the Young People and Democratic Engagement Member Policy Workshop in 1999 as part of our new democratic framework. The Workshop's remit was to review how we engage with young people and recommend ways to improve their involvement with us and the process of democratic engagement.
The Workshop's membership includes several of our senior elected Members and its work is supported by officers from departments across the Authority.
The Workshop's final report and recommendations were approved by our Cabinet and Council at the end of 2000. You can download a copy of the report in PDF format by clicking on the link on this page. Since then, the Workshop has continued to meet to monitor progress within our Authority and provide an elected Member lead on national initiatives relating to democratic engagement with young people such as, for example, the Hear by Right standards.
In January 2006, the Workshop noted that most of its work had focused on school-aged young people. As a result, it has begun to consider what could be done to encourage young people aged 18 to 24 years to become more involved in the democratic process. The Workshop hopes to make its recommendations for action by Spring 2007.
Minutes of the Workshop and reports are available to the public.
