Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council has prepared a Constitution document in accordance with Section 37 of the Local Government Act 2000 and the Council adopted the Constitution which was introduced with effect from 25th July 2001.
The Constitution brings together, in a single volume, a wide range of information regarding how the Council is organised and how its business is conducted. The information it contains sets out:-
(a) An explanation of the Council's democratic arrangements in terms of the operation of the full Council, Cabinet, Scrutiny Commissions, Area Forums and Regulatory Boards .
(b) Full details of all the functions exercised by the Council, Cabinet, Regulatory Boards, Scrutiny Commissions and Area Forums and those functions which are delegated to Council Officers.
(c) Other documents of the Constitution which are relevant to the organisation and operation of the Council.
The Council's democratic and management arrangements are subject to periodic review and the relevant sections of the Constitution are to be revised and updated as and when necessary.
A copy of the Constitution, which is a lengthy document, is available for public inspection in Public Libraries in the Borough or in the Democratic Support Section of the Borough Secretary's Department at the Town Hall, Barnsley.
