The purpose of a referendum is to determine a public response to one or more questions. To date, only one UK-wide referendum has been held. This was in 1975 to determine whether or not Britain should remain in the Common Market.
All eligible voters can take part.
The framework for the conduct of national referendums, and referendums conducted in any one nation or region of the UK, is now contained in the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000 Part VII. The chief counting officer for the referendum will be the Chairman of the Electoral Commission or a person appointed by the Chairman to act in their stead. The chief counting officer appoints a counting officer for each "relevant area" in Great Britain. In England this means a district or London borough.
