Cabinet supports funding bids for more council homes

CABINET members in Barnsley have given their support to four further bids for new council homes across the borough. The four schemes at Bolton-upon-Dearne, Thurnscoe, Darfield and Brierley could provide 62 new homes, including 36 family homes, 16 bungalows and 10 two-bedroom apartments.

Cllr Bill Newman, Cabinet spokesperson for Development, said: “This bid is part of our new-build affordable housing initiative, and if successful would be warmly welcomed. Each scheme has been designed to very high standards to provide highly energy-efficient homes to help meet the needs of our local communities. We are working very closely with Berneslai Homes in this project to bring more new homes to Barnsley.”

The bids are being assessed by the Homes and Communities Agency as part of the Local Authority Challenge Fund Round 2 initiative, and the outcome is expected shortly. Each scheme has been specifically designed to help meet local needs, providing a range of quality accommodation for the wide range of waiting list applicants.

Cllr Newman added: "These latest bids are in addition to our already successful bid to build new council homes at Ward Green."
