AS Christmas draws near, don’t forget to stock up on those festive essentials at Barnsley’s fantastic markets, open every day from Friday (18 December) to Thursday 24th. The last late-night shopping opportunity is Wednesday 23rd, so get yourself down to town for those special gifts.
On Saturday (19th) in Cheapside hear your favourite Christmas tunes as you’ve never heard them before! The Red Hot Santas, playing trumpet, trombone, accordion, tenor sax, sousaphone and drums perform festive funk, ska and calypso. Listen out for Winter Wonderland (reggae), In the Deep Mid Winter (bossa nova), God Rest ye Merry Gentlemen (traditional jazz), Santa Claus is coming to Town (swing), I'm dreaming of a White Christmas (slush brass) and more.
On Sunday 20th, Worsbrough Mill will host their Christmas Carol Concert organised by the Friends of Worsbrough Mill in conjunction with Barnsley Council. Festive light installations will decorate the site and activities will take place at the mill and in the courtyard. From noon visitors will have the opportunity to get involved in a Christmas wreath-making workshop by the mill’s resident woodsman, or watch a glass blowing demonstration by Nottingham artist, Anthony Wassell.
There’s also a tombola, book stall, free mulled wine and mince pies, as well as the brilliant Worsbrough Brass Band and Ward Green School’s Children’s Choir to entertain visitors between 3pm and 5pm.
Father Christmas will be up at Cannon Hall in his beautifully decorated grotto on Sunday (20th) from 11am to 4pm with the last admission at 3.15pm.
