THEY are all heart at Barnsley libraries! Staff will be marking National Heart Month in February with a variety of activities and events.
Cllr Roy Miller, Cabinet Spokesperson for Customer and Neighbourhood Services, said: “Barnsley libraries are delighted to be involved with National Heart Month and to take the opportunity to show that libraries are at the heart of the community!”
Throughout the month health professionals will be visiting libraries to offer free blood pressure checks and there will be stop smoking advice sessions. These check-ups are part of February’s BEAT campaign, which encourages people to Be Active, Eat Healthily, Avoid Smoking and Take the lifestyle check.
During February, libraries will be promoting their books on healthy eating and lifestyle, including salt-free recipes – Salt Awareness Week is from February 8 to 13.
Romantics will be relieved to learn that libraries will also be catering for other heart-related issues with an appropriately themed quiz whose prize is a ‘romantic night in’ package. This will include a pack of two romantic films on DVD, a bouquet of flowers from local florist ‘Black Orchid’ and a bottle of champagne donated by Rhythm and Booze.
Everyone adult who registers for a library card during the month will be entered into a draw to win a romantic night out prize. The night will start with cocktails for two (donated by Blah Bar) and end with a romantic meal for two, courtesy of Latino’s Restaurant, Barnsley.
Barnsley’s Central Library on Shambles Street will be hosting a free flower arranging demonstration by Black Orchid florists on Friday, 12 February at 10am.
Children will also be included, with a month-long competition inviting them to explain “Why I love my library”, with two prizes of family tickets donated by Penistone’s Paramount Cinema.
