Spanish classes available
Although it may not seem like it with all the snow and slush that’s still lying around, the nights are already starting to get shorter and the days longer, so maybe it’s not a bad time to start thinking about how you are going to spend your leisure time in spring and summer.
For those people who are considering taking their holidays in Spain this year, Barnsley Council’s adult and family learning service is offering a series of classes to help visitors to get by in the language and get more out of their trip.
On these free taster courses, taught by a very popular native speaker of Spanish, learners will be enabled to greet people and introduce themselves, ask for drinks and snacks, and ask for and understand simple directions.
For anyone who wishes to continue, follow-on courses will be available.
Classes will be held as follows:
Cawthorne Village Hall, Monday mornings from 10am to 12 noon from Monday, 18 January to Monday, 1 February.
The Eldon Centre, Eldon Street North, Barnsley on Tuesday evenings, 5pm to 7pm and 7pm to 9pm (two separate classes) from Tuesday, 19 January to Tuesday, 23 February.
The Eldon Centre, Eldon Street North, Barnsley on Friday mornings from 10am to 12 noon from Thursday, 21 January to Thursday 25 February.
Anyone who wishes to enrol should come along to one of the sessions and bring a pen, some paper, plus their national insurance number.
For those who already have a little knowledge of Spanish, spaces are available in some of the other classes recently started by adult and family learning: for example, at Darfield Library on Wednesdays from 1pm to 3pm and Wednesday evenings at Age Concern, Queen’s Road, Barnsley, from 7pm to 9pm.
More advanced classes are also available at various venues around the borough.
A free five week taster course in British Sign Language is also on offer. This will take place at the Wharncliffe Communal Centre in Gilroyd, Dodworth, from 5pm to 7pm on Tuesday evenings, starting on Tuesday, 19 January.
