AS the severe winter weather continues, Parks officers at Barnsley Council have issued an urgent reminder to people to stay away from frozen water.
They say they have received reports that some people are risking their lives by venturing onto frozen ponds despite prominent warning signs for ‘Thin ice’. The urgent warning, following reports at Milton ponds, Hoyland, and Park Hill, Darfield, also applies to frozen rivers and canals.
“With the freezing conditions due to continue we urge people to remember the dangers of playing on frozen water,” said Parks Officer David Gill. “Most bodies of water are deeper than they look and carry undercurrents.
“If you are walking dogs please keep them under control near water and, if they get into difficulty, do not try to rescue them by going onto the ice. Phone the emergency services, who are prepared for such incidents.”
For more advice and guidance on safety around frozen water please contact the Parks department on (01226) 772646.
