A CHINESE Lion Dance delighted the crowds at Cannon Hall Museum, Park and Gardens on Sunday 20 July.
As the summer finally arrived at the weekend there were a host of activities enjoyed by visitors to the busy site.
To mark the start of China Inspired, a programme of events and a small exhibition about China, there was a traditional lion dance by the award winning Yorkshire-based NCCMA lion dancing team followed by activities such as paper-lantern making, paper-folding, calligraphy, Chinese tea tasting, stalls and dressing up costume.
Mr Loh, a respected member of Barnsley's Chinese community, gave a speech to introduce the official launch of China Inspired and was keen to ensure the traditions were observed.
It is traditional for a lion to bless events so he even went into the Hall itself where it is equally traditional to offer a bunch of lettuce hanging up at the front door - not perhaps what most visitors would expect to greet them!
Also during the weekend there were actors from Century Adventures who were entertaining visitors with their games and antics as a couple of Edwardian explorers on a hunt for fairies.
China Inspired and many other family friendly activities will continue throughout the summer.
This Sunday, 27 July there is a chance to see in action the artists whose work is currently on display. They are visiting from the renowned Art Research Institute in Xian, China and will be demonstrating their skills as well as a chance for visitors to get involved.
The day Sunday also sees the Rotary Club’s Classic Car Rally and coming soon is a free Kung Fu demonstration by the Lau Gar Club on Saturday 16 August. For more information please contact the museum on (01226) 790270.
