The Acorn Centre, Grimethorpe, will be hosting a very special event on Wednesday, 9 July.
Children from Milefield and Ladywood Schools have been taking part in a project called The Grimethorpe Schools Poetry Festival. Their remit was to write a poem inspired by the phrase “What Grimethorpe means to me”. The entries have been judged by Cabinet Spokesperson for Children, Young People and Families, Cllr Linda Burgess, Ian McMillan, Mel Dyke and Andy Cave.
The winning 13 children, their parents and headteachers, will be joined by the judges and invited guests, at a presentation ceremony to mark the childrens’ achievement.
They will receive a certificate, medal and book token. An invitation to tour Barnsley Football Club and its facilities, generously donated by Dave Hancock, will be presented by him on the night.
Acorn Centre Manager, Margaret Stevenson, said: “This pilot project has been rewarding and enjoyable for everyone, and has produced beautiful and creative work from the children. The festival, which is taking place in the National Year of Reading, highlights the fun of reading and writing poetry, raises awareness of local identity and heightens the profile of The Acorn Centre and its library within Grimethorpe.”
