Barnsley libraries service is on its marks and getting set to keep young people active and keep them reading throughout the summer holidays with Team Read, the theme for this year’s Summer Reading Challenge.
It’s simple – children read six books of their choice from their local library in the holidays. They also receive a range of sporty incentives to spur them on along the way and a certificate and medal on completion.
Librarians at Barnsley libraries will act as team coaches to encourage and motivate them – along with their families and carers, of course! Children can also access an interactive Team Read website on computers in the library to share reading ideas with top authors and illustrators.
It is hoped that children who complete the challenge return to school enthused about reading, motivated and ready to learn.
Last year around 1,500 Barnsley children participated and library officers want to increase that number for the National Year of Reading.
Team Read runs from Saturday, 12 July to Saturday, 6 September. For more information on details of story times or craft activities during the summer, please contact your local library.
