BARNSLEY Archives and Local Studies department, based in the Central Library, Shambles Street, will be closing for an hour over lunchtime from 1pm to 2pm, from Monday, 21 July.
The change in opening times follows consultation with current users.
The department’s opening times will be:
Monday 9.30 – 1pm 2pm – 7pm
Tuesday 9.30 – 1pm 2pm – 5.30pm
Wednesday 9.30 – 1pm 2pm – 6pm
Thursday 9.30 – 1pm 2pm – 5.30pm
Friday 9.30 – 1pm 2pm – 5.30pm
Saturday 9.30 – 1pm
This will free up staff to undertake valuable developmental work, including the sorting and cataloguing of new archives in order to make more of Barnsley’s documentary heritage accessible to the public.
The highlights of archive collections recently catalogued and made available for public access include:
• Billingley estate plan from 1779,
• papers relating to Barnsley’s Tommy Taylor and the Munich disaster,
• material relating to the Public Hall disaster of 1908,
• photographs of the Musgrave and Morte families of Barnsley,
• Dearne Goldthorpe Primary School records,
• Birdwell Working Mens’ Club records,
• papers relating to Shaw Mills and the Piggott family.
Customers will be able to use the other facilities at the Central Library, including the café, throughout the day.
