TAKING the reins of a horse for the first time, the Mayoress of Barnsley, Mrs Beryl Sanderson, practises for a sponsored ride next month in aid of two charities.
Mrs Sanderson will ride in the outdoor arena at Barnsley Riding for the Disabled Association on Saturday, 16 August (10am) in aid of the association, and the teenage cancer unit at Weston Park Hospital in Sheffield.
Both charities are beneficiaries of the Mayor's Charity this year and both have identified projects that are in immediate need of funding. In the case of the riding for the disabled association, money raised by the Mayoress will be spent on hedge planting around the perimeter of the centre at Pontefract Road. Funding is needed by the teenage cancer unit at Weston Park – which treats patients from areas including Barnsley – for a Wii Fit computer console.
As she prepares for the charity ride, the Mayoress is photographed riding six-year-old draft horse Bear at the outdoor arena at Barnsley Riding for the Disabled. Accompanying her are (from left) Kerrie Phelps, Becky Jones, Sophie Crossland, Kimberley Grant and yard manager Catherine Mitchell.
If you would like to support the Mayoress's fund-raising on 16 August please contact the Mayor's Secretary, Liz Wright, on (01226) 773804, email: elizabethwright@barnsley.gov.uk
