AS PART of National Neighbourhood Watch Week, which starts on Monday, 16 June, Barnsley town centre will be hosting a crime prevention advice session.
On Wednesday, 18 June, officers from the Central Safer Neighbourhood Team and volunteers from local Neighbourhood Watch schemes will be available to give out advice on crime prevention and on setting up watch schemes. The police bus will also be available from 11.30am to 1.30pm.
Cllr Roy Miller, Cabinet spokesperson for Customer and Neighbourhood Service said: “Statistically we know that Barnsley is a safe place, and the partnership work between the police, the council and other agencies has made huge strides in addressing local problem crimes such as car break-ins and burglary. Neighbourhood Watch teams have proved invaluable in providing local intelligence for police to act upon in their areas, and their work has been recognised by all manner of parties, including insurance companies – who usually offer reduced rates for areas that have a current watch scheme in place.
“There’s always more that people can do to help, and one of those is helping themselves by taking precautionary measures. I would hope that people take advantage of the expert advice on offer on the 18th and, in doing so, reduce the likelihood of ever becoming a victim of crime.”
