Giants roam the streets for Carnival Parade

TRAPEZE artists and giants are just a couple of the acts bringing Barnsley town centre to life on Saturday, 14 June as part of the summer carnival and parade, from 10am to 4pm.

Urban Angels, a circus company-style act, will be performing two 30-minute aerial trapeze shows in Cheapside at 1pm and 3pm.

Sheffield City Giants are the UK's only Catalan-style processional giants. They are about 14 feet tall, weigh around nine stone, and each is carried by one person. Accompanied by the Giants Big Band, the Giants will perform a number of dances in Peel Square at 11.30am, 12.30pm and 3.30pm.

A highlight of the day will be the ever-popular parade, which takes place at 2pm from lower county way car park then travelling along Regents Street, Eldon street, Mayday Green, Cheapside, New Street, Wellington Street, Peel Square, Market Hill and Regent Street  before returning to the car park.

Twenty-eight organisations are taking part this year, including the Frumptarn Guggen Band, Barnsley British Legion, Funny Gals, Barnsley Youth Dance Theatre, The Lamproom Theatre, Barnsley Chinese Association, Crofton Starlight Majorettes, Shindo Kai Karate Clubs and Barnsley Schools Samba.

There will be information stalls run by Barnsley College, The Civic, Berneslai Homes, Wentworth Castle Gardens, Asda, Fit for the Future and Barnsley Older Peoples Community, among others.

The carnival and parade will be officially opened by the Mayor of Barnsley, Cllr Ken Sanderson. He said: “The summer carnival is a great opportunity for everyone to come together and celebrate Barnsley and the people who live throughout the borough, as well as having an enjoyable family day.”
