A FREE workshop to raise awareness about refugees takes place on Friday, (20 June) from 1.30pm to 4pm at the Cooper Gallery, Church Street, Barnsley.
The event has been organised by One Barnsley, in partnership with Barnsley Council, the Community Safety Service, MARCO (Migrant Asylum Refugee Community Organisation), the Northern Refugee Centre and BBEMI (Barnsley Black and Ethnic Minority Initiative).
The workshop and discussion on One Barnsley will feature voices of the new Barnsley. Speakers will be local, including the Mayor of Barnsley, Cllr Ken Sanderson, poet and broadcaster Ian Macmillan and the Principal Hate and Hidden Crime officer Max Senior.
The voices of local established ethnic minorities, new migrant workers, refugees, asylum seekers will be heard sharing their experiences and challenges. Their voices could start busting some of the myths and misunderstandings which threaten One Barnsley.
There will also be the opportunity for members of the public to sign the One Barnsley Charter against racism and hate crimes at a stall in Barnsley precinct in the morning, as well as at the workshop.
The charter recognises and supports the equal rights of everyone in Barnsley.
