OFFICERS from Barnsley Council’s Regulatory Services and the police are warning the borough’s pensioners to ignore a bogus letter trying to con them out of money.
The letter has been sent to a number of households in Barnsley and claims to be from Zhao Jin of the China Trust Commercial Bank.
It says that the recipient is entitled to some inheritance of around £4 million and asks them to correspond strictly via a telephone number. The person will then be asked for their bank details, leaving them open to fraud.
Officers would like to confirm that the letter is completely fake and should simply be thrown in the bin.
Cabinet Spokesperson for Customer and Neighbourhood Services, Cllr Roy Miller, said: “If anyone receives this letter, or one similar, please ignore it, it is a scam. There are many unscrupulous people trying to con money out of the vulnerable – don’t be a victim.”
