BARNSLEY Council has continued its clampdown on those who litter the borough’s streets with the successful prosecution this week of a litter offender
Penny Hines (32), of Uplands Avenue, Darton, did not attend court, but telephoned to plead guilty under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 to the offence of throwing down a cigarette end outside Carphone Warehouse in The Arcade, Barnsley, and leaving it. The case was heard by Barnsley Magistrates on Monday (16 June).
She was offered the opportunity to pay a £75 Fixed Penalty Notice, but failed to pay this or any of the instalments offered.
She was ordered to pay a £80 fine and £82.50 costs, following a successful prosecution in a case brought by Regulatory Service’s Environmental Regulatory Unit.
Cllr Roy Miller, Cabinet spokesperson for Customer and Neighbourhood Services< said: “We are still striving to improve significantly the cleanliness of the borough, which needs the support of all Barnsley’s communities to achieve this. We have just placed many new bins with cigarette disposal facilities in the town centre and there is no excuse for throwing litter on the floor.
“Part of our commitment is our zero-tolerance approach and to ensure that those who litter and choose not to pay their Fixed Penalty Notice of £75 are brought before the courts. I believe this serves as a warning for those who feel they can dispose of their cigarette ends in such an irresponsible way.”
