THIS IS AN ARCHIVED PRESS RELEASE AND IS DISPLAYED FOR INFORMATION PURPOSES ONLY

BARNSLEY Council and Fit for the Future have produced a new pack of walking guides to encourage new and existing walkers to go out walking more often.

The packs are provided free of charge, and include six new walks throughout Barnsley. All of the walks have been mobility assessed, and vary in length from just under a mile to more than four miles.

The pack includes a map of each walk and the route description, along with details of the distance, the grade of difficulty and the approximate time each walk will take to complete.

Cllr Bill Newman, Cabinet spokesperson for Development, said: “Regular walking can improve your fitness level and is a very effective form of exercise. After a few weeks of walking you will start feeling fitter and healthier. Barnsley offers a diverse and attractive environment for walking, with a variety of planned routes and networks including the popular Trans Pennine Trail.”

The new routes are as follows:

  • Grimethorpe and Brierley, the walk is 4.8 miles and is graded easy to moderate,
  • Whinns Wood Carlton, the walk is 0.7 miles and is graded easy,
  • Dearne Valley Park, the walk is 2.1 miles and is graded easy to moderate,
  • Hoyle Mill and Cundy Cross, the walk is 4.4 miles and is graded easy to moderate,
  • Phoenix Park, the walk is 2.1 miles and is graded easy to moderate,
  • Wombwell Ings, the walk is 3 miles and is graded easy to moderate.
