National adult learners week offering free taster session

To celebrate National Adult Learners Week, Adult and Family Learning are holding a number of events in Barnsley.
Free taster sessions in British sign language will be held on Monday, 19 May at Age Concern, Queens Road, Barnsley, from 5.30pm to 7pm. 

Adult and Family Learning are also offering a free introductory Spanish course at Meadstead Primary School (Children’s Centre), Royston, on Monday afternoons from 4pm to 6pm.

On Wednesday, 21 May an event to celebrate adult learning will be held at the Mall, Alhambra.  There will be an exhibition of learners’ arts and craft work from 9am to 5.30pm, plus a competition to judge a 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize in each of the five subject areas which are arts, crafts, stained glass, digital photography and sewing. Prize winners will be announced at 3pm in the Mall. There will also be the chance to win a flat screen LCD TV by completing a free quiz.

Throughout the day, there will be a series of short taster courses and demos which anyone can take part in, each session in the following subjects lasts approximately 45 minutes:

• British sign language,
• Italian,
• mask making for children and adults,
• card Making,
• watercolour Painting,
• digital Imaging,
• stained glass,
• scrap booking,
• cake decorating,

On Thursday, 22 May there will be another free taster session in British sign language at the Roundhouse Lifelong Learning Centre, Laithes Crescent, Athersley, from 6pm to 8pm.

The following taster sessions will also be held throughout the day in the Central Library:
• arts and crafts including sewing, stained glass and digital photography from 9am to 12pm,
• story telling from 9.30am to 12pm,      
• Croatian from 9.30 to 10.30am,
• German from 11am to 12pm,
• Italian from 1pm to 2pm,
• French from 2.15pm to 3.15pm,
• Spanish from 3.30pm to 4.30pm,
• relaxation, tai chi and qigong from 10am to 5pm.
