A local community clean-up will take place in Great Houghton, Barnsley, this Thursday (5 June) to mark World Environment Day.
The clean-up will take place on the land either side of Rotherham Road, Great Houghton, by the disused railway embankment, together with footpaths and surrounding woodland areas.
Local residents, elected members and representatives from a number of organisations will be litter-picking, tree pruning and generally tidying the area. A youth group will make nesting boxes and attach them to trees to help sustain natural habitats for local wildlife.
North East ward councillor Dorothy Higginbottom explained that the area, which is used by walkers, cyclists and horse-riders, will benefit greatly from a clean-up.
Significant work has been carried out previously by Barnsley Council. However the area suffers from persistent littering and some fly-tipping. The council’s Customer Services and Neighbourhoods directorate will provide two skips, plastic bags and gloves for the work to be done safely.
