SOME of Barnsley’s children who walk to school found themselves the lucky winners of some great prizes, including a bike, at a draw performed at the Town Hall by the Mayor of Barnsley, Cllr John Parkinson and Mayoress Mrs Linda Parkinson.
The Mayor said: “Competitions like this are a fun way of promoting healthy and sustainable travel and it’s very encouraging to see so many of our school pupils taking part. I’d particularly like to thank Inspace Partnerships Ltd who generously contributed the bike.”
The prize draw was part of National Walk to School Month, which primary schools across the borough took part in last month.
Every time pupils walked to school during October they were entitled to enter a competition in which they could win a bike, or bike vouchers, and runner-up prizes of t-shirts.
From the thousands of entries received, the winner of the bike was Mercedes Taylor aged six of Summer Lane Primary School. There was also a prize of £200 worth of bike vouchers, which can be spent at Barnsley Bicycle Centre, which was won by Georgia Barnett aged 11 of The Kingstone School. This prize was donated by Barnsley Council as part of their sustainable travel initiatives.
The Mayoress drew several runner-up prizes which will be sent to the lucky pupils.
