NATIONAL Grid has been in Barnsley town centre for the last couple of days, investigating a suspected minor gas leak to the Metropolitan Centre supply pipe located in the stairwell adjacent to the Mall.
The company has detected minor spot readings and are on site constantly monitoring the situation. At no time has there been any danger to the public or the building.
While the market hall and offices at the Metropolitan Centre remain unaffected, unfortunately the cafes based there may be affected by any repairs to the pipes, should the supply need to be disrupted. The owners have been kept informed and are thanked for their understanding and support.
Drilling is taking place in the area to pinpoint the exact location of the leak and National Grid will inform Barnsley Council of their findings as soon as possible.
The town centre management team is confident that the work will not interrupt the exciting programme of magical winter events planned in the town centre for the festive season.
Any further updates will be displayed on the news section of the council website: www.barnsley.gov.uk
