THE MOST noticeable building on the Barnsley skyline is going pink to help raise awareness of breast cancer issues.
Throughout October the usual floodlighting at the Town Hall on Church Street will be changed to pink, as part of the council’s support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It is hoped that as the nights darken the Town Hall will provide a visual reminder of the campaign for miles around and be a beacon of hope for a disease that in one way or another affects so many people.
Barnsley Council’s Head of Communications Bob Williams said: “The Town Hall is the most prominent building in the borough, and anyone approaching the town centre can hardly fail to notice it. This is the first time this iconic building has itself been used to raise awareness of an important issue. I am sure people in the borough who aren’t aware that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month soon will be. If, in turn, this encourages more people to be checked or raises more money for research, it is a job well done.”
Plans were also being finalised to encourage as many council employees as possible to give their personal support to the campaign by taking part in Wear it Pink day on Friday, October 31. To mark the last day of the campaign people up and down the country are being encouraged to wear something pink; and donate £2 to the campaign to help fund vital life-saving research.
