Audit of Accounts - Notice of Public Rights

BARNSLEY METROPOLITAN BOROUGH COUNCIL

AUDIT OF ACCOUNTS - NOTICE OF PUBLIC RIGHTS

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that pursuant to Section 15 of the Audit Commission Act 1998 and the Accounts and Audit Regulations 2006 Sections 11, 12 and 14:

1. Monday to Friday, from 4 August  to 29 August 2008, between 9.00am and 4.00pm any person interested may inspect and make copies of the accounts of Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council for the year ended March 31st 2008 and all books, deeds, contracts, bills, vouchers and receipts relating thereto.  The accounts and other documents will be available for inspection at the offices of the Executive Director of Finance, Westgate Plaza 1, Barnsley S70 2DR (telephone 01226 773237).

2. On Monday 1st September 2008 between 10.00am and 4.00pm, the Auditor at the request of a local government elector for any area to which the accounts relate will give the elector or his representative, an opportunity to question him about the accounts.  Any such elector or his representative may attend before the Auditor and make objections under section 16 of the Audit Commission Act 1998 as to any matter in respect of which the Auditor could take action under Section 17 or 18 of the Audit Commission Act 1998.  These matters are any unlawful item of account, a failure to bring a sum into account or a loss or deficiency caused by wilful misconduct or any issue which the Auditor could make a report in the public interest under Section 8 of that Act.

No objection may be made unless the Auditor has previously received written notice of the proposed objection and its grounds.
