Community Involvement
The service is keen to encourage the general public, community groups and schools in Barnsley to broaden their knowledge of the local environment and to actively participate in practical projects to improve and conserve it. Staff resources have always limited the amount of assistance available but external funding for temporary appointments, the Single Regeneration Budget and European monies have already assisted some communities such as Athersley, Kendray and Grimethorpe.
On a broader front, the Countryside Group continues to work with local landowners, sometimes in conjunction with the Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group, to carry out practical conservation such as tree and hedge planting and walling works. Volunteer tasks are also organized, mainly through the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) for mid-week, weekend and even week-long holidays, drawing on local volunteers and those from much further afield.
If you would like to find out more about involving your community or volunteering opportunities contact NigelLabdon@barnsley.gov.uk
