Countryside Recreation & Public Rights of Way
The Countryside Group is responsible for the maintenance, promotion and certain legal aspects of the Boroughs Public Rights of Way network.
We have over 700 kilometres of Public Footpath and Bridleway across the Borough from the inner town centre to the wilds of Dunford Bridge. Much of the Trans Pennine Trail is also now dedicated as Public Right of Way. Walking and riding guides including the Trans Pennine Trail are available from the section, by contacting countrysideregen@barnsley.gov.uk.
The Countryside Group is responsible for ensuring that the Public Rights of Way network is well maintained. The Public Rights of Way Team is also responsible for keeping the definitive map up to date, ensuring it provides an accurate and up to date record of Public Rights of Way across the Borough. This is available for inspection, at Central Offices. For further information:
Diversions, Extinguishments and Planning related matters phone 01226 2570 or 01226 772571

Additional public rights of way information can also be obtained from the Institute of Public Rights of Way Officers web site.
