  • Carlton Marsh is a wetland site between Carlton and Cudworth renowned for its bird life.
  • Potter Holes Plantation is a small woodland area in Tankersley which supports good communities of birds, mammals and a diverse flora.
  • Elsecar Reservoir is based around the reservoir in Elsecar, which was used to feed the canal network in the area.
  • Dearne Valley Park is a large area just 5 minutes walk from Barnsley Town Centre. It is a mixed mosaic of woodlands, lakes, river habitats and grasslands.
  • Worsbrough Country Park is based around the Worsbrough Reservoir, another canal feeder, and includes a visitor centre, tearooms, shop and cycle hire facilities.
