Awards
Maurice Dobson Heritage & Amenity Centre, Darfield
Designed For: Darfield Area Amenity Society Ltd
Designed By: Martin Stancliffe Architects
Executed By: Irwins Ltd
A very thorough and meticulous restoration of a listed house and former shop in the heart of the Darfield conservation area. Former owner Maurice Dobson gifted the building and contents to the community. As well as a museum, it will provide a venue for local history and community activities.
Potting Shed Cafe, Pot House Lane, Silkstone
Designed For: Kate E Horsfield
Designed By: The late George Yarwood
Executed By: Tom Horsfield
A clever extension to a former watermill, with a completely new lower wing forming the cafe and kitchens. The result of using local oak, natural stone and running water is outstanding, and the scheme combines traditional construction and contemporary interior design in an exciting way.
Commendations
Barnsley Bookworm, 2-4 The Arcade, Barnsley
Designed For: Ian Smith
Designed By: Jack Ingham of Bookworks
Executed By: Geo. Beard & Son Ltd
The grey painted cast stone cladding and 1960's shopfitting of a vacant shop has been removed, revealing original decorative cast-iron columns. The new fully-glazed oak shopfront now successfully echoes the building opposite and the completed scheme greatly enhances the Arcade.
Car & Coach Park, Cannon Hall Open Farm
Designed For: C R Nicholson & Sons
Designed By: Susan Farmer and Jane Furse
Executed By: D Burke & Son
This project shows how a potentially intrusive development can, with skill and care, be satisfactorily accommodated within a sensitive rural site. All hard areas are surfaced in natural river gravel that complements the landscape. All planting, fencing and detailing has been carried out well in appropriate materials.
Wilthorpe Nursery, Greenfoot Lane, Wilthorpe, Barnsley
Designed For: Barnsley MBC, Education
Designed By: Barnsley MBC, Property & Procurement
Executed By: Barnsley MBC, Building Works
A lively little building which has been cleverly incorporated into the school complex in materials that reflect those of the main building. The natural top-lighting and internally exposed roof structure is considered to be particularly effective.
Wombwell High Street Forecourt Improvements
Designed For: Barnsley MBC & Private Owners
Designed By: Barnsley MBC, Highways & Engineering; and Lesley Fallais
Executed By: C R Reynolds Construction Ltd
This scheme has completely transformed a large, bleak area of drab concrete flags, with few features, into a well-landscaped pedestrian and markets area full of visual interest. Well-integrated public art, high quality paving, substantial trees and consistent use of colour make up a very good scheme.
Special Mentions
The Brambles, Barugh Lane, Barugh Green, Barnsley
Built For Sale By: Haslam Homes (Yorkshire) Limited
Designed By: Haslam Homes Design Department
A housing development which benefits from good detailing, a limited number of materials and an attractive "family" of house types. The contrasting brick dwellings with painted doors and windows work well, as do the double and triple garage blocks and the high brick and stone walls.
The Orchard Brewery, 15 Market Hill, Barnsley
Designed For: Deltacloud Ltd
Designed By: Don Ritson Design
Executed By: Illingworth & Gregory
Converting these listed former retail premises into a brewery pub, cafe bar and restaurant included demolition of an inappropriate flat- roofed front extension, creation of a new shopfront, cleaning the previously painted stonework, and re-instating the windows. Internally, the building's character is maintained with original timber and brickwork exposed.
A628 Trans-Pennine Trail Footbridge, Bullhouse, Penistone
Designed For: Barnsley MBC, Planning & Transportation
Designed By: Barnsley MBC, Highways & Engineering;
And: Sheffield City Council, Design & Property
Executed By: John Mowlem & Co plc, Northern Civil Engineering
This is a prominent but pleasing new form in the landscape. The bridge's main structure is picked out in dark green, while the light-coloured safety fencing tends to blend into the background. The Trans-Pennine Trail and Millennium Commission logos add further visual interest.
