Planning consultation is a method by which the Council assesses the constraints on individual application sites by obtaining the views of consultees.
Almost all planning applications will have some form on consultation undertaken prior to determination.
Statutory Undertakers, External and Internal bodies and adjacent Local Authorities are consulted by letter with a copy of the planning application and any supporting documentation. A written response is anticipated within 21 days however, for largescale or complex developments this period may take longer.

There are no additional charges for consultations, their cost is covered by the planning application fee.

All planning applications are available to view at the Barnsley Connects Offices, Barnsley Town Centre, County Way, Barnsley, S70 2TJ.
Some largescale or complex applications are sometimes made available to view at local libraries, details will be advertised when this happens.

Consultees wishing to comment on a planning application should do so in writing within 21 days of the date of the consultation. If no response is made or a request for a time extension has not received the Council will assume that the consultee does not wish to make any comments.

Who are External Bodies?
External Bodies are organisations that may have an interest in development; for instance the South Yorkshire Archaeology Unit would have an interest in preserving and recording any archaeological remains prior to the commencement of development works of known ancient sites.
Who are Internal Bodies?
Internal bodies are the Councils own departments, such as Environmental Health, who would be consulted on noise or other pollution issues.
Consultation responses will be made by people with specialist knowledge within their field of expertise.
