If you are thinking of making alterations to your property, first need to determine if planning permission is required.
It will be likely that you require planning permission if you want to build a new home, alter or extend a property, or change it’s use.
From 1st October 2008 new regulations have been introduced that affect what householder developments require Planning permission. Generally the new regulations now mean that more projects are permitted development. Permitted development is development which does not require planning permission.

Council has also published a number of guidance notes relating to householder development which you may find useful. Of particular interest would be SPG 4 & annex to SPG 4 .
If you are still unsure as to whether Planning permission is required the council offer a free Householder Enquiry Service.
You are required to fill in the following Householder Enquiry Form adding as much information as possible and send in to the address below. We aim to respond to your enquiry within 10 working days.
Once you have established whether planning permission is required you will need to complete the relevant Planning Application Forms and send it into the Council with the correct supporting documentation and Fee.
All forms have a related guidance note and checklist which explains what information is required to be submitted along with your application form. Applications can also be made via the Planning Portal website .

Building Regulations
Please bear in mind that whilst many householder projects do not required planning permission, there may still be a requirement to make a Building Regulations Application which principally deals with the health & safety aspects of a building.
