The planning system aims to ensure that the right amount of development is provided in the right place to meet local and national needs. This involves making sure that enough houses, shops and job opportunities are provided and that there are good transport connections. It is also about making sure that valued areas such as parks, countryside, wildlife areas and historic buildings are protected.
The Planning Policy team is part of Council's Planning & Transportation Service and is responsible for the interpretation of adopted policy and production of emerging policy.
Adopted Policy
The document setting out the Council's planning policy is the Barnsley Unitary Development Plan (UDP). Additional planning guidance is given in the form of Supplementary Planning Guidance.
Emerging Policy
The Barnsley Unitary Development Plan (UDP) will eventually be replaced by the Local Development Framework (LDF).
