The planning system aims to ensure that the right amount of development is provided in the right place to meet local and national needs. This involves making sure that enough houses, shops and job opportunities are provided and that there are good transport connections. It is also about making sure that valued areas such as parks, countryside, wildlife areas and historic buildings are protected.
The Planning Policy team is part of Council's Planning & Transportation Service and is responsible for the preparation of the Local Development Framework, the interpretation of the Unitary Development Plan (the statutory development plan for Barnsley) and Supplementary Planning Guidance.
