Introduction
The Council is asking for comments on the draft 'Barnsley Town centre Public Spaces Strategy'. The Council has commissioned urban designers Gillespies to devise this strategy and it is proposed that it will become Council policy in due course.
Purpose of the Strategy
The strategy is intended to guide the development of the public spaces in the town centre and sets out a 20 year vision, priorities for investment and design solutions, this strategy will help make it possible for creation of unique , sustainable, high quality town centre environment of beautiful and safe public spaces for Barnsley.
Draft design briefs for six 'priority' sites and seven 'gateway' sites in the town centre have been prepared. These briefs will provide the information necessary to prepare detailed designs. They will also set the principles that will feed into the design of potential future private and public developments projects.
