The Council has prepared a number of guidance notes which explain how the policies in the Unitary Development Plan will be implemented. Some of the guidance notes also bring local policy in line with more up to date national policy. These notes are intended to help people who may be thinking about applying for planning permission and to assist the Council in making decisions. By providing this advice, the Council ensures the planning application process runs smoothly and that good quality development is achieved.

More information about the planning application process is provided on the Development Control web pages.

Three types of guidance notes are available:

  • Supplementary Planning Guidance (SPG) - covering particular types of development or development issues. Once the new Local Development Framework is adopted and new guidance is produced to supplement  the new policies, they will be called Supplementary Planning Documents.
  • Planning Briefs - guidance applied to specific sites.
  • Planning Advice Notes (PAN) - used to update the UDP where National Planning Policy has changed.

All notes are available free of charge from Barnsley Town Centre Connects, Civic Hall, Eldon Street, Barnsley, S70 2JL, by downloading them from the list below or by calling Planning Policy on 01226 772606.
