The Transportation Service exists to support Barnsley's vision of a 21st Market Town and to ensure that smaller settlements within the borough become sustainable communities. To provide the long term economic, environmental and social vitality of the borough we need the best transport system that can be devised and delivered.
A good transport network is crucial as a means by which people engage in economic, social and recreational activities. It also underpins the business life of Barnsley and connects the many separate strands of life within the borough for example, where people live, work, shop and play; where businesses operate, obtain goods, services and the employees they need to sustain a profitable business. It is the provision of a balanced transport system, which will facilitate Barnsley's vision and ensure accessibility for all its residents.
The functions of the boroughs Transportation Service are:
The Transportation Service commissions and manages the implementation of major infrastructure schemes. Currently under construction are Barnsley Interchange and the Dodworth Bypass. Other schemes include the development and implementation of Quality Bus Corridors such as the A61 QBC due for completion in 2007/2008.
Other activities provided by the service include the development of walking cycling and park and ride strategies and action plans, School and business based travel plans, traffic surveys and data monitoring.
